What’s Medicare?
Medicare is the U.S. federal health insurance program. We work to simplify Medicare so you can confidently make the right choice about your insurance needs.
Medicare’s Four Parts
Most people qualify for the Federal health program called Medicare when they turn 65.
Part A: Hospital
If you have worked for a full ten years and paid Social Security taxes, you pay nothing.
Part A covers most medically necessary expenses when you have been admitted to the hospital. Skilled nursing facilities, home health care, and hospice care are also covered by Part A. There are expenses you are responsible for that include reoccurring deductibles and co-payments.
Part B: Doctors
Most people pay $164.90 per month for Part B, though it is possible that you may have to pay more than that depending on your income two years earlier.
Part B covers physician services, tests, medical supplies, and outpatient services. Like Part A, there are still reoccurring deductibles and other cost-sharing expenses for which you are responsible.
Part C: Medicare Advantage
Medicare Advantage plans are provided by private health insurance companies that are allowed to administer Medicare health plans. These plans come in several different forms, though HMO, PPO, PFFS, and SNPs are the most common.
If you choose this option the private insurance company is now your primary insurance, and you cannot use your original Medicare Parts A and B.
Part D: Prescription Drug Plans
All Prescription Drug Plans are provided by private insurance companies; they are never provided directly from the federal government. There are three phases of coverage: Initial Coverage, the "Donut Hole" or Coverage Gap, and Catastrophic Coverage.
It is important to understand how these phases can affect your out-of-pocket costs, especially if you have high-cost medications.
